Since I grew up in Southern California I didn't know a lot about winter. The first real extended winter experience I had was in Chicago. Mostly I remember how the colors blended together just as the sun was finally fading, and how the drops of water melted on your window and made everything slightly blurry. Everything would get wet. If there was nobody outside crunching around in the snow it would be the biggest silence you could ever imagine.
